In the third instalment of this classic British crime series, the return of an old friend and the arrival of a new cousin spell yet more danger for the Lancefield family of Penwithen.
Five months have passed since revenge led to murder at Salvation Hall, home of the reclusive Lancefield family, and no one – least of all the victim’s family – expected to see the killer walk free. So, when news of the unwelcome verdict reaches the Cornish village of Penwithen, DCI Ennor Price can only brace himself and wait for the fallout.
Five hundred miles away in Edinburgh, the discovery of a young woman’s body behind an elegant Georgian town house looks like a murder without a motive to DCI Alyson Grant, until the chance sighting of a van leaving the crime scene offers her the slimmest of slim possibilities. But when that van turns up in Cornwall, and Grant asks Price for help to trace the driver, she isn’t prepared for his response.
Because Price doesn’t agree that the murder lacked a motive, any more than he thinks that the murderer will stop at one victim.
But is he right to think he can draw out the killer without overplaying his hand? Or will he risk unleashing a tragedy from which the Lancefield family – and Price himself – might never recover?
Murdering a city guard is a treasonous act, punishable by death.
And when Laurel Gunderson finds herself in that exact situation, she knows a quick death would be a mercy. For if the King of Axtria learned of the existence of a halfling-elf, there would be no telling what atrocity he might inflict upon her.
One action, one job, throws Laurel’s life into utter turmoil. The careful choices made throughout her life to remain a secret are at risk. There is only one option. Laurel and her closest confidant, Cole, choose to flee for their lives.
But when the open road cannot offer Laurel and Cole the sanctuary they need, they’re presented with an offer neither of them knew existed. A proposal from Laurel’s ex-lover.
A resistance is growing, gathering in the shadows across Axtria, working to undo the laws laid down. The aim is to return Axtria to a place of liberty. Something Laurel has dreamed of all her life.
Taking a stand with those who oppose Eberlim, Laurel and Cole face their greatest challenges yet. Protecting those who cannot defend themselves. Risking it all for a chance of freedom. With her life on the line, can Laurel resist the man she’s never stopped loving, to continue living a life of fear and secrets or will her heart win out?
Without risk, there is no reward.
Without the resistance, there is no future.

Another wonderful and humorous instalment in the Guesthouse on the Green series as Mammy and Moira travel Vietnam.
I love the series and can't wait for book four!
A quick but emotional read - reading about the cruelty to the dog was heartbreaking but this was a lovely tale of the love and healing that animals can bring to our lives.
I would have given five stars but for the missed typos - a few t...
I get the impression that this could be a nice story but I've had to give up after forcing myself to go as far as 15% of the way through. If this novel has ever been near a remotely professional editor then the author was conned.
