It may surprise you to know that one of the most commonly misspelled words I come across when editing is ‘makeup’. Makeup is not a word.

Make-up is a mass noun with several meanings:

  1. Cosmetics such as lipstick or powder applied to the face, used to enhance or alter the appearance.
‘she came downstairs, her face still white under her heavy make-up’
    with modifier ‘stage make-up’
    as modifier ‘chief make-up artist’
  2. The composition or constitution of something.
‘ozone damages the cellular make-up of plants and trees’
  3. Printing
The arrangement of text, illustrations, etc. on a printed page.‘page make-up’
  4. North American count noun A supplementary test or assignment given to a student who missed or failed the original one.
‘I would have flunked the course but she let me write a make-up’

Make up is a phrasal verb meaning to be reconciled after a quarrel.

I spent the weekend completing the edit of the great new revenge thriller Vengeful by Sharon M Thompson.  Vengeful is available 26th March.

Set in Australia the change of scene gives me the opportunity to discover wonderful new words and the star prize for this novel goes to –

fossicking – In Australia, New Zealand and Cornwall, fossicking is prospecting, especially when carried out as a recreational activity. This can be for gold, precious stones, fossils, etc. by sifting through a prospective area. In Australian English and New Zealand English, the term has an extended use meaning to “rummage”.

Sharon’s first novel Secrets is available now.
